Imran Khan's Detention: A Controversial Move Under International Scrutiny

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has declared that Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, is being unlawfully detained, violating international law. In a recent opinion, the Geneva-based group demanded Khan's immediate release and called for compensation and reparations as per international legal standards.

The Working Group, comprising independent experts, highlighted that Khan's imprisonment lacked legal justification and appeared to be politically motivated to prevent him from participating in future elections. They criticized the broader context as a campaign of repression against Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, citing arrests, torture of party members, and disruption of their rallies in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.

Furthermore, the Working Group alleged widespread electoral fraud aimed at stealing parliamentary seats during the election day, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the electoral process.

The UN opinion, dated March 25 and released recently, underscores the serious concerns regarding human rights and democratic principles in Pakistan. While the Working Group's recommendations are not legally binding, they carry significant international weight, emphasizing the need for adherence to fair legal practices and respect for political rights.
